The first look is a modern tradition involving a 1:1 photo session between the bride and groom where they see each other for the first time PRIOR to the ceremony.
This is absolutely not a required thing for you to do on your wedding day! Some brides still want that first time to be when they walk down the aisle and I’m totally on board with that…
However…
First looks can be super intimate and beautiful and I highly recommend having a first look on or prior to your wedding day.
A first look can totally help with intense nerves before you walk down the aisle, and add to the excitement of the day. It gives you that alone time together that is CRAZY hard to come by on your wedding day.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning your first look…
1. Allow Enough Time
I’ve shot many first looks before, and the MINIMUM amount of time I need to set up and photograph it emotionally is 15 minutes. I’m much happier with 20-25 though!
2. Include Your Photographer
Talk to your photographer (hopefully that’s ME and I’ll make sure I ask you about it!) about your first look vision or ask for advice. You’ll want to nail down all the logistics, like timing, positioning, and any other details before, so when the moment comes, you’re as carefree as possible and can just enjoy the moment.
3. Leave Out The Wedding Party
This is a moment that is best captured alone, so let me take care of the moment for you. That way you’ll feel free to totally give yourself over to the moment and not worry about impressing anyone but your fiance.
4. Don’t Be Shy
Ignore the camera! This is my #1 tip for your wedding day, actually. I’m there to document your entire day, you don’t always have to look at me and smile. Enjoy the moment, engage with each other. I will tell you when I need you to pose, otherwise, just be present in the moment!
5. Don’t Choose A Busy Spot
If you hire me as your photographer, your first look spot will be one of the first things I scout for at your location, so you won’t have to worry about it. It’s really important to find a spot that is away from other people so you can just have a minute to soak in the moment.
6. Let It Be YOURS
Don’t try to force tears, or get mad if your fiance doesn’t cry or get emotional. Some guys are super chill when they see their girl all dressed up for the first time, some aren’t. It doesn’t mean they love you any less. Let them feel their emotions naturally, and feel yours the way you feel them too! (yes, authentic FEELINGS are actually super important!)
