Weddings are timeless celebrations! 

There’s a variety of reasons why we cherish and preserve family heirlooms, customs, and memories, from our weddings, they’re love celebrations. Over the years, wedding traditions have been established and maintained, consider the wedding vows, which include “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” 

Some wedding trends are believed to last a lifetime, while others are more likely to fade away. From the legalization of same-sex marriage to the introduction of Pinterest and Instagram, weddings have transformed dramatically in the previous decade. As a result, we’ve seen a changeover and have begun to embrace and appreciate it!

Here are a few wedding trends to consider: I love to share things from the past and now, and I’m sure any bride would love reading about them as well.

Photo of the Bride and Groom

Old: Photographs were scarce and considered a luxury in the late 1800s. Because of the extended exposure time at the time, the bride and groom are barely smiling. The snapshot was taken in around 15 minutes!

New: Photos are a normal part of life, and a wedding is no exception. You can expect hundreds of images to commemorate your big day because images can be shot in a second, easily edited, and shared. There’s also a lot more personalization touching on.

The Cake

Old: Tiered wedding cakes were first introduced in the early 1900s. The white frosting between each layer represented purity, while the tiers between each layer indicated prosperity.

New: The color and shape of your wedding cake are entirely up to you. It doesn’t even have to be a cake any longer. Pie, cupcakes, or even a stack of doughnuts could be served. There’s no limit to what you can achieve.

The Wedding Dress

Old: Wedding gowns of the 1970s and 1980s were all about high necklines and puffy sleeves. They wore long trains and sleeved dresses, and they all looked the same.

New: Strapless, backless, lace, vintage beaded, mermaid style, jumpsuit, even mid-length gowns are all on-trend right now. In 2021, the modern bride is more concerned with practicality and comfort than with aesthetics.

The Rings

Old: Diamonds were reserved for royalty in the early 1900s. Both wedding bands were a plain band, occasionally with messages carved on the inside. 

New: Diamonds are still costly, but love conquers all. It’s all about the bling these days. But, once again, the diamond’s cut and ring style are all about the wearer’s personality or whatever your fiancee decides.

Wedding Hair

Old: Back in the 1950s and 1980s, wedding hair was all about accessories, and many ringlets. Traditionally, women wore veils.

New:  It’s all about flower crowns and rainbow-colored hair. Whatever best reflects your personality.

The Guestbook

Old: Guestbooks were used to attest to the truth of marriage. On the line, everyone in attendance signed their name.

New: Photo books are now quite popular for weddings. Your visitors take a picture, tape it into a book, and write a message next to it. Or if you are one of my couples- you can even turn your engagement session into a customized guestbook for your guests to drool over, and leave you a message. Such a GREAT souvenir to have from your own wedding, that is easily stored in any home, large or small.

The Reception

Old: Until the 1990s, everything was quite formal and matchy-matchy. Wait staff serviced the guests.

New: Family-style wedding parties are more popular. Guests are expected to serve themselves.

The Grand Exit

Old: Showering the newlyweds with rice on their way out was a sign of prosperity, fertility, and good fortune.

New: Sparklers are a significant trend in today’s weddings. They’re used to light the way for the lovebirds and make for stunning photographs.

Music

Old: Big bands performed at your wedding reception in the 1920s. If you couldn’t afford a big band, you could listen to live music and dance to it.

New: At a wedding reception, music is usually provided by a DJ and Acoustic Performer and or Band.
