Camp Hero Proposal Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Pop the Question in Montauk

If you’re dreaming of a breathtaking Camp Hero proposal, you’re in the right place.

Located on the eastern tip of Long Island in Montauk, Camp Hero is one of my favorite places to photograph surprise proposals. Between the dramatic ocean cliffs, scenic walking trails, and unforgettable sunsets, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose this location for one of the biggest moments of their lives.

After photographing proposals throughout Montauk, I’ve learned that a little planning goes a long way. Here are a few tips to help make your proposal as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Why Choose Camp Hero for Your Proposal?

Camp Hero offers something that many proposal locations don’t: variety.

Within just a short walk, you’ll find dramatic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, wooded trails, open fields, and beautiful coastal views. Whether you’re looking for a quiet, intimate setting or an epic landscape, Camp Hero delivers both.

The famous bluffs have become one of Montauk’s most recognizable proposal spots, especially at sunset when the light is absolutely incredible.

The Best Day to Propose at Camp Hero

One of the biggest pieces of advice I give couples is to consider proposing on a weekday whenever possible.

Camp Hero has become a popular location for outdoor wedding ceremonies, especially on Saturdays during peak wedding season. While proposals can absolutely happen any day of the week, Saturdays often bring wedding guests, vendors, and additional foot traffic to some of the park’s most scenic overlooks.

If your schedule allows, Sunday through Friday usually provides a quieter experience with more privacy.

If Saturday is your only option, don’t worry. With a little planning and flexibility, it can still be an amazing place to propose.

The Best Time of Day

Golden hour is always my favorite.

Since many of the cliffs face west, the hour before sunset creates warm, flattering light and incredible colors across the sky.

Even cloudy evenings shouldn’t discourage you. Overcast skies often create soft, romantic light that’s beautiful for photography.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The trails at Camp Hero are mostly easy to walk, but some areas near the cliffs are uneven.

I usually recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the walk and bringing dress shoes if you’d like to change once you reach your proposal spot. It’s a simple trick that keeps everyone comfortable while still looking polished in photos.

Plan Ahead

Cell service around Camp Hero can be inconsistent.

Before arriving, make sure you’ve confirmed the exact meeting location and timing with your photographer. Having a solid plan ahead of time helps everything unfold naturally, especially when you’re trying to keep the proposal a surprise.

Why Hiring a Photographer Matters

One of the biggest concerns I hear is:

“How do I make sure she doesn’t see the photographer?”

That’s where experience makes all the difference.

Knowing where to stay hidden, how to blend into the surroundings, and exactly where the best light falls allows the proposal to happen naturally without giving away the surprise.
