Surprise Proposal at Shadmoor State Park | Montauk Proposal Photographer

Dennis proposes to Delaney during a surprise proposal at Shadmoor State Park in Montauk.

Some proposals are grand productions. Others are beautifully simple.

Dennis knew he wanted to ask Delaney to marry him while they were visiting Montauk, and after exploring several options, he chose Shadmoor State Park for its quiet beach, stunning coastal bluffs, and incredible golden hour light.

As a Montauk proposal photographer, I had actually never photographed a proposal at Shadmoor before. After this evening, I can confidently say it won’t be my last.

Hidden just east of downtown Montauk, Shadmoor State Park offers a different feel than many of the area’s better-known proposal locations. The dramatic bluffs overlook the Atlantic Ocean, the beach feels more secluded, and during sunset the light becomes absolutely magical.

Dennis and Delaney took what she believed was simply an evening walk along the beach.

Then everything changed.

As they reached the perfect spot along the shoreline, Dennis turned toward Delaney, got down on one knee, and asked the question she’d never forget.

Her reaction was priceless.

The excitement, the surprise, and the emotion are exactly why I love photographing proposals. There are no rehearsals. No second takes. Just one genuine moment that becomes part of a couple’s story forever.

A Celebration Worth Remembering

One of my favorite surprises happened after the proposal itself.

Waiting nearby were family members, ready to celebrate with champagne as soon as Delaney said yes. Their excitement made the evening even more memorable, and it gave us the opportunity to capture not only the proposal but also the joy of celebrating with the people who mean the most.

Those candid moments often become some of my clients’ favorite photographs.

Why Choose Shadmoor State Park for a Proposal?

If you’re planning to propose in Montauk but want something a little more private than the busiest beaches, Shadmoor State Park is an incredible option.

What makes it special?

  • Beautiful coastal bluffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean
  • Wide sandy beaches with room to spread out
  • Incredible golden hour sunsets
  • A quieter atmosphere than many nearby locations
  • Plenty of space for romantic portraits after the proposal

It’s quickly become one of my favorite hidden gems for couples looking for a naturally beautiful location without the crowds.
